Cobb set to OK tax-paid buses to Braves stadium

MARIETTA, GA (WXIA) -- Cobb County commissioners are expected to vote tomorrow to buy buses that will take fans to the new Braves stadium -- SunTrust Park. But critics say it will cost taxpayers too much and the Braves too little.

One of the bus system's destinations will be the the new Braves stadium; getting people onto the site has been a thorny project for Cobb County. One solution is what county officials call a circulator bus system. Rooted in the Cumberland Mall Area Transfer Station, buses would run routes connecting Cumberland area hotspots -- and parking spots -- and the new ballpark.

Part of Moores Mill Road closed due to water main break

ATLANTA – Emergency repairs shut down traffic on a major metro Atlanta road.

Moores Mill Road between smyr and Ridgewood Road was closed Tuesday due to a water main break. The incident happened at around 1 p.m.

A car reportedly hit a fire hydrant in the 1900 block of Moores Mill Road. Despite the water main break, water service wasnot interrupted during repairs.

2 in custody after wild scene near Cumberland Parkway

COBB COUNTY, Ga. -- Two people are in custody after a wild incident that began with an alleged shoplifting attempt at Home Depot in Cobb County on Friday.

According to police, officer responded to the Home Depot on Cumberland Parkway near Interstate 285 on a shoplifting call. The suspect allegedly fled the store and got into a woman's car in the parking lot of a nearby Starbucks. In addition to the suspect and a woman, two children were also in the car, police said.

When officers attempted to make contact with the vehicle, they said the woman left the drive-thru at a high speed, striking an officer and knocking him to the ground. She then continued, hitting another car and two patrol vehicles. 

2 children in ICU after Smyrna crash

SMYRNA, Ga. -- Two children were critically injured in a crash involving a minivan and a bus in Smyrna on Tuesday.

The accident happened on Windy Hill Road around 2:36 p.m. A Cobb Community Transit bus collided with a minivan carrying three children and one adult.

One man was extricated from the minivan. Two children, aged between 2 and 6, were ejected from the vehicle. They were transported to hospitals in critical condition. As of 8 p.m., one child was in the intensive care unit at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital, while the other was in ICU at Children's at Scottish Rite Pediatric Hospital. 

The third child was also take to the hospital with minor injuries.

Several people on the bus complained of injuries, but none were thought to be serious.

Authorities say charges will likely be filed in the next few days. It's not yet clear who was at fault.

Marietta man convicted, sentenced in robbery turned double homicide

MARIETTA, Ga. -- A Marietta man has been convicted in the double homicide that happened outside of a Smyrna eatery in 2013.

Isadore Walker Barboza, 46, was convicted of malice and felony murder, aggravated assault, armed robbery and firearms possession charges and will spend the rest of his life in prison, Cobb County District Attorney Vic Reynolds said in a statement.

A Cobb jury deliberated just over an hour this afternoon before convicting him on the charges.

The evidence showed that in the early morning hours of Oct. 28, 2013, Barboza and two accomplices were inside Doc’s Food and Spirits on Cumberland Blvd. with the intention of committing an armed robbery.

Detectives describe Ross Harris after hot car death of son

ATLANTA -- New details emerged Tuesday morning in regards to what Ross Harris said to authorities moments after discovering his 22-month-old child dead in his car.

Detective Jacquelyn Piper, who was a patrol officer the day Cooper died, was the first of two detectives to take the stand. There, she discussed three statements Harris made when he was arrested.


Judge denies Ross Harris motion to close courtroom

ATLANTA - A judge has denied a motion by the attorney for the man accused in the hot car death of his child to close the courtroom to the public and media during pre-trial hearings.
