Atlanta Opera announces 2013-14 season

ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Opera has revealed its 2013-14 lineup.

The new season will begin with a staging of Giacomo Puccini's Tosca, the story of a strong-willed diva who battles police chief Scarpia for the life of Cavaradossi, the man she loves.

Tosca will be performed in early October. It will be sung in Italian with English translations projected above the stage.

The second show in the 2013-14 season is Faust, an operatic retelling of the legend of a scholar who sells his soul to the devil in exchange for a chance with the beautiful Marguerite. Charles-Fran├žois Gounod's opera is considered a classic struggle between good and evil.

Faust will be sung in French with English supertitles. It will be staged in March 2014.

The season will end with an opera staple -- Gioachino Rossini's The Barber of Seville. It follows Figaro, a barber who uses disguises and antics to woo the maiden Rosina right under the nose of Dr. Bartolo, who intends to have her for himself. The production's music can be heard in everything, from commercials to a 1949 Looney Tunes cartoon called "The Rabbit of Seville."

The Barber of Seville will be performed in late April and early May 2014, and will be sung in Italian with English translations.
