Senior Idol brings music, comedy, dance to Cobb County

COBB COUNTY, Ga. -- For the ninth time, Cobb Senior Idol is being held for all residents in Cobb County. 

On Tuesday, May 7, at the Jennie T. Anderson Theater, there will be an afternoon of entertainment, including music, comedy and dancing, as contestants compete to become the 2013 Cobb Senior Idol. The top five will be chosen by a panel of judges, and the winner will be decided by audience members.

Tickets are $5, available at local senior centers or at the door. 

Anyone interested in performing should call (770) 528-1445 by the May 6 deadline.

Atlanta Opera presents 'The Italian Girl in Algiers'

ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Opera will close its 2012-13 season with Gioachino Rossini's The Italian Girl in Algiers.

The opera opens this Saturday, Apr. 27.

It follows the story of an Italian woman kidnapped by an Algerian ruler who wants to add her to his harem. But he isn't expecting his new "wife" to turn the tables and rescue the man of her dreams. It is sung in Italian with English translations projected above the stage.

Tickets for The Italian Girl in Algiers range in price from $24 to $131, plus fees. All performances will be held at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center.

Atlanta Symphony Associates announces signature events for 2013 Decorators’ Show House & Gardens

ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Symphony Associates is pleased to announce a series of signature events as part of the 43rd Annual Decorators’ Show House & Gardens. In addition to touring the home, these events welcome all attendees to participate and indulge in tailored special presentations — including lectures, book signings, garden tours, wine tastings, and cooking demonstrations — that will take place at Tuffeau Estate in April and May.
 
The French-inspired home, designed by Atlanta’s well-known residential designer William T. Baker, will play host to these special events and provide firsthand experiences with a variety of keynote presenters. Events are complimentary with the purchase of a ticket to tour the home on the same day of the presentation. All proceeds will benefit the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and its education and community engagement programs.

ATLANTA - The 43rd annual Decorators’ Show House & Gardens at Tuffeau estate is pleased to welcome aboard its 2013 designers. This year, the notable talent will showcase their inventive design ideas while focusing on fresh techniques, creative trends and innovative process.  Open to the public from April 20 – May 12, 2013, Tuffeau is a French-inspired Show House nestled within a West Paces Ferry neighborhood.
 
“This year’s designers represent sophistication, quality and distinction,” said Natalie Miller, the 2013 Show House Chair. “With these qualities, attendees can look forward to an exquisite blend of modern and traditional styles.”

Author to hold book signing at Caribou Coffee

ATLANTA -- A Mableton author will hold a book signing at a local coffeeshop next weekend.

Wayne E. Beyea is the author of The Treasure of Valcour Island. He will sign copies of the book Saturday, Apr. 20 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Caribou Coffee on Northside Parkway in Buckhead.

According to Beyea's publisher, Tate Publishing:

2013 Shuler Hensley Awards nominees announced

ATLANTA -- Some of the most talented young performers in Georgia have been recognized with nominations for the 2013 Shuler Hensley Awards.

The awards program honors the best high school musical theater productions in the state.

It is named for Cobb County native Shuler Hensley, a seasoned Broadway performer who has won a number of prestigious awards, including a Tony.

This year's Shuler Hensley Awards nominees were announced Tuesday. The awards ceremony will be held Apr. 18 at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre.
