Atlanta Opera announces 2012-2013 season

ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Opera has revealed the three productions in its 2012-2013 season.

Dennis Hanthorn, Zurich General Director of the Atlanta Opera, announced the mainstage productions Monday.

The season will open with one of opera's most memorable productions -- Georges Bizet's Carmen. According to information provided by the Atlanta Opera:

Bizet's immensely popular opera set in sultry Spain traces Don José's ill-fated attraction to the alluring gypsy, Carmen. When Carmen does not reciprocate his feelings, intense jealousy turns to vengeance and dooms the fiery romance to a tragic end. Carmen is full of sizzling opera hits, including the famous "Habanera" and the irresistible Toreador's song.

Carmen will be performed four times in November 2012 and will be sung in French with English translations projected above the stage. Mezzo-soprano Maria José Montiel will make her Atlanta Opera debut in the title role.
