Indulge in a free sugar cookie on Tax Day

(WXIA) -- There's nothing sweet about completing your taxes -- but Great American Cookies wants to change that.

On Wednesday, Apr. 15, all Atlanta-area Great American Cookies locations will offer each customer a free sugar cookie. It will be the third time the cookie chain has offered a little sweet relief on Tax Day.

"Only in the world of Great American Cookies is Tax Day this enjoyable," Great American Cookies Brand VP David Kaiser said in a release. "After all those tax forms and number crunching, we think everyone deserves a treat to savor."

No purchase or proof of completed taxes is necessary to take advantage of the free cookie promotion.

Teen wins Delta Community CU scholarship to Morehouse

ATLANTA -- A McDonough teen has received a $1,875 scholarship from Delta Community Credit Union.

Adam Turner, 18, will begin his freshman year at Morehouse College this fall. He was given the first of four Delta Community scholarships for students who plan to attend historically black colleges and universities.

Turner claimed his scholarship this week at Delta Community's Vinings branch.

The Delta Community-KISS 104.1 HBCU Scholarship program plans to award a total of $7,500 in college money. The next scholarship recipient will be chosen this summer; a call for entries will be announced on KISS 104.1.

The scholarship program was created in recognition of Delta Community's 75th anniversary.

T.MAC raises money for Christopher Sparkman

(WXIA) -- All 22 Atlanta-area T.MAC restaurants will raise money for Christopher Sparkman this week.

Sparkman was working as a security guard at a Kennesaw FedEx facility last April when he was shot in the abdomen. Since the shooting, Sparkman has undergone more than 30 surgeries. His wife Jamie Lynn quit her job to help take care of him.

The Sparkman family faces enormous medical bills; Jamie Lynn has spoken publicly about the need for financial assistance.

T.MAC customers who want to help Sparkman pay for his treatment can do so on Thursday, Apr. 2. Diners can drop their receipts in designated collection boxes; 10 percent of their bills will be donated to the Sparkman family.

Free short stack at IHOP for National Pancake Day

(WXIA) -- Tuesday is National Pancake Day, and all Atlanta-area IHOP locations are celebrating by offering free short stacks to customers who support Children's Miracle Network.

Every year, IHOP restaurants raise money for children's hospitals nationwide, including Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, on National Pancake Day. Diners have the option of making a donation in exchange for free buttermilk pancakes.

Reigning Miss Georgia Maggie Bridges stopped by the IHOP in Chamblee Tuesday morning, where she served breakfast and spoke with Children's Miracle Network Champion Sutton Burnett. Other local Miracle Children visited the IHOP restaurants in Peachtree City, Smyrna and Woodstock.

Registration for the 2014 Cobb County Senior Games is open until Aug. 8. Events will include basketball (three point shot and free throw), billiards, bocce ball, bowling, field events, golf, pickleball, putting, swimming, table tennis and track events. Registration is $20 for Cobb residents and $25 for non-residents. Bowling has an additional fee of $5 and includes three games and shoe rental. Golf has an additional fee of $40 and includes greens fees, cart, continental breakfast and lunch. Opening ceremony will be held Aug. 20 and closing ceremony Sept. 16. Chick-fil-A makes 5,900 meals for kids who receive free, reduced school lunch

(ATLANTA BUSINESS CHRONICLE) -- The owners of 60 metro Atlanta Chick-fil-A restaurants provided 5,900 lunches Wednesday to children in seven counties who typically receive free and reduced lunches at school, reports Marietta Daily Journal.

The food made its way to children through MUST Ministries, whose summer lunch program has been around for 19 years. Program volunteers meet at churches in Bartow, Cherokee, Cobb, Forsyth, Gwinnett, north Fulton, Paulding and Pickens counties five days a week to make, pack and deliver lunches to nearly 6,000 children across eight counties for 10 weeks during the summer.

Smyrna police officer saves baby's life

SMYRNA, Ga. -- The Smyrna Police Department is crediting a master patrol officer with saving a baby's life this week.

Darrell Nesbit performed CPR on the 11-month-old child after finding the baby unresponsive. It happened at around 11:40 p.m. Wednesday at the Glendale Apartments off South Cobb Drive.

Police said the child was not breathing when Nesbit arrived at the apartment complex. He took the baby from the mother and administered first aid on the trunk of his patrol car. After a short time, the child began breathing again.

"MPO Nesbit's immediate response and heroic actions are credited to saving the infant's life," Smyrna Police spokesperson Christopher Graeff said in a release.
