Ledford death sentence upheld

ATLANTA -- The Supreme Court of Georiga has unanimously upheld the murder conviction and death sentence given to Michael William Ledford for the murder of Jennifer Ewing.

Ewing, 53, was attacked and killed July 25, 2006 while biking along the Silver Comet Trail.

"Upon our review of the record, we conclude that the evidence presented at trial was sufficient to authorize a rational trier of fact to find Ledford guilty beyond a reasonable doubt on all charges," Presiding Justice George Carley wrote in the Court's opinion.

The Court's decision concluded with a sentence review of other murderers in which the jury recommended death.

Cobb police nab Vinings bank robber

ATLANTA -- The Cobb County Police Department's Robbery Squad has arrested a man in connection with a recent bank robbery.

Jesse Clarence Odum, 24, of Atlanta has been charged with Robbery. He is being held in the Cobb County Adult Detention Center.

According to investigators, on Wednesday, Mar. 9 at approximately 4:06 p.m., Odum entered the Bank of America on Akers Mill Road, where he handed a demand note to the teller.

The teller handed cash to Odum, who then ran from the bank.

Odum was identified through follow-up investigation and was arrested by police officers with the City of Atlanta.

Mableton Woman Arrested after Standoff

SMYRNA, GA -- Smyrna police officers have arrested a Mableton woman after a standoff at her home.

Susan Rasmussen, 53, has been charged with aggravated assault.

Police arrived at Rasmussen's house on Ivy Green Way in Mableton at 5:58 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 23, after receiving a 911 call about a domestic dispute.

According to police, the caller was Rasmussen, who allegedly reported a domestic incident and then hung up the phone.

When police arrived on the scene, the discovered that Rasmussen was holding her husband, 54-year-old Mark Rasmussen, captive inside the house. She released him, but remained inside the house, armed with a pistol and a baseball bat.

Members of the Smyrna Emergency Services Unit, Special Operations Division, Criminal Division and department hostage negotiators established a perimeter around the house and tried to reason with Rasmussen.

Around 8:30 a.m., Rasmussen was talked outside.

Cobb Police Search for Two Robbery Suspects

COBB COUNTY, GA -- The Cobb County Police Department's Robbery Squad is currently investigating two armed robberies in Smyrna and Acworth, respectively.

The first incident was a strong arm robbery that occurred at 7:52 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 12 at the Microtel Inn Atlanta Galleria (5300 South Cobb Drive, Smyrna, 30080).

The suspect entered the hotel, used his closed fist to strike an employee on the side of the head, and demanded money. After receiving cash from the register, the suspect left the business on foot.

The victim described his attacker as a thin black man who was about 5'7". He was wearing a black hooded jacket, dark blue jeans, a skull cap and a piece of fabric covering his face.

In the second case, a different suspect robbed a McDonald's (1855 Mars Hill Road, Acworth, 30101) at 8:40 p.m. on Sunday, Feb.

ATLANTA -- On Monday, Jan. 24, Michael William Ledford will appeal his conviction and death sentence for the murder of Jennifer Ewing, who was attacked and killed while biking along the Silver Comet Trail.

According to evidence presented at the trial in this high-profile case, on the morning of July 25, 2006, Ewing, 53, spoke to her daughter and son before leaving their house for her normal 25-mile bike ride along the trail.

When she did not return by dinnertime, Ewing's husband and two sons went to the trail to look for her. After finding her locked van, her husband called police.

A search party of about 100 people began combing the Cobb County portion of the trail. The next day, Paulding County police located her bike shorts near mile marker 17.

Person of Interest Named in Smyrna Homicide

SMYRNA, GA -- The Smyrna Police Department has named a person of interest in the Tuesday, Dec. 28 shooting death of a local man.

Horatio Lamar Pearson, 21, was named a person of interest on Monday, Jan. 3. Police would like to question him in connection with the murder of 42-year-old Cordell Henry at the Galleria Courtyard Apartments (2409 Galleria Lane, Smyrna, 30080).

Initially, the victim's red 2007 Mazda 3 was stolen from the crime scene. It was found abandoned on Wednesday, Dec. 29.
