School district announces graduation schedule

MARIETTA, Ga. -- Graduation is right around the corner for high school seniors in Cobb County.

The school system has announced the graduation dates, times and venues for its high schools. Family members and friends who can't attend the actual ceremonies can purchase DVDs and, in most cases, watch live Web broadcasts of the events.

Block party to celebrate public safety education

Block party to celebrate public safety education

AUSTELL, Ga. -- The Cobb County Department of Public Safety will hold a public safety education block party next weekend.

The fun will be held Saturday, Apr. 20 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Parkview Atlanta Apartments.

Cobb County Police and Fire personnel will be in attendance, as will 911 operators, animal control officers and members of the Community Emergency Response Team. There will be food, music and plenty of family-friendly fun.

The Parkview Atlanta Apartments complex is located at 360 Six Flags Drive in Austell.

ATLANTA -- A Mableton author will hold a book signing at a local coffeeshop next weekend.

Wayne E. Beyea is the author of The Treasure of Valcour Island. He will sign copies of the book Saturday, Apr. 20 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Caribou Coffee on Northside Parkway in Buckhead.

According to Beyea's publisher, Tate Publishing:

ATLANTA -- This year's Sweep the Hooch event is expected to be the biggest one yet.

The annual Chattahoochee River clean-up to slated to attract nearly 600 volunteers at a number of locations along the water.

Last year, Sweep the Hooch participants gathered up nearly four tons of trash.

"This is the kind of hands-on work that Chattahoochee Riverkeeper and our partners do that reaffirms our commitment to keeping our river clean," Chattahoochee Riverkeeper executive director Sally Bethea said in a statement. "We'll have volunteers paddling the river, wading in the water and combing the shoreline for trash."

Clean-up locations along the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area run from Buford Dam to Paces Mill.

Sweep the Hooch will be Saturday, Apr. 13 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. To sign up as an individual or with a group, visit sweepthehooch.org.

SMYRNA, Ga. -- Smyrna's Jonquil City Jog 5K will be off and running on Saturday, Apr. 27.

The race, which is an AJC Peachtree Road Race qualifier, will begin at 8 a.m. at Smyrna City Hall. The out-and-back course takes runners down Atlanta Road, past the Village Green, Market Village and Campbell Middle School.

Proceeds from the Jonquil City Jog benefit the Campbell High School Education Foundation, Inc., which provides financial and community support to Campbell High students.

Pre-registration is $25 for the timed 5K and $15 for the tot trot and 1K fun run. The 5K fee goes up to $30 on race day.

ATLANTA -- The Dare 2 Aspire event is celebrating its 3rd Bi-Annual conference at The Sheraton Suites Galleria-Atlanta on Saturday, Mar. 23.

Hosted by Tosi Ufodike, this year's theme is "Dream Big & Execute."  The event is designed exclusively for women and mom-preneurs as a way to provide encouraging and inspirational for aspiring business owners. Dare 2 Aspire's mission is for women to "fulfill their destiny," and promises to offer practical knowledge in order for ladies to move towards successful careers in entrepreneurship. This year, the conference has opened its doors to college women.

Dynamic speakers will lead workshops such as "A Virtuous Woman is A Business Woman," and " "Email + Social Media Marketing=Success."  The conference also offers an opportunity for women to network and leave with a great deal of business connections.
