Vinings Jubilee to light its Christmas tree Thursday

ATLANTA -- This year's Vinings Jubilee Christmas tree lighting will be held Thursday, Nov. 29.

The fun begins at 6 p.m. with music, refreshments, horse-drawn sleigh rides, face painting, pictures with Santa Claus and more.

Choirs from Teasley Elementary School and Lovett School are scheduled to perform.

Attendance is free. Vinings Jubilee is located at 4300 Paces Ferry Road.

FMSA family and community enjoy fall activities

Families, students, and the community recently enjoyed a fun-filled fall day at First Montessori School of Atlanta's 18th Annual Montessori Mile. In addition to road races, the Saturday activities included gardening, a Family Festival, a Chili Cook-off and a Soles4Souls shoe collection drive. Participants also contributed to Middle School student Sarah Tolchin's ongoing effort to collect funds for Pennies for Peace and purchased homemade nut-free basil pesto made by Livia Osorio’s Upper Elementary class.

Parents and students competed in the first-ever FMSA Chili Cook-Off. Marcell Lubsey earned bragging rights and a Golden Ladle for the best-tasting chili.

Winning runners in the children's events were (1st) Matt Fumo and Amy Soba; (2nd) River Ross and Annie Ingham; and (3rd) Jack Friedline and Alexandra Lubsey.

POSTPONED: Saving Young Brains lecture hopes to curb underage drinking

MARIETTA, Ga. -- The Cobb Alcohol Taskforce has partnered with several Cobb County PTAs to present a panel on the dangers of youth binge drinking.

The Saving Young Brains event  at Turner Chapel AME Church in Marietta has been postponed, the new date has not yet been announced..

Jeff Dess, a prevention specialist with Cobb Schools Prevention Intervention Center, will facilitate the lecture, which aims to arm parents with tools for reducing underage drinking.

All parents with children ages 9-25 are invited to attend.

Path2College scholarship coloring contest ends Sept. 30

ATLANTA -- Georgia children in Pre-K through 5th grade can now color their way to a college scholarship from the Path2College 529 Plan.

In honor of College Savings Month, the statewide college savings program is hosting a coloring contest with a $1,529 scholarship at stake.

To win the money, children must color a picture of Hootie the Wise Old Owl and complete a sentence: When I graduate, I'm going to be a ________.

Entries must be postmarked by Sept. 30 and must be received no later than Oct. 5. More information about the contest can be found at path2college529.com.

A winner will be randomly chosen in mid-October.

Consignment sale to benefit church preschool

SMYRNA, Ga. -- This weekend's major consignment sale at Smyrna First United Methodist Church will allow parents to buy everything they need for their children at deeply discounted prices.

The KinderMartSale will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 21, and from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 22.

About 300 sellers will attend the sale, and their merchandise will be checked for breaks and stains before it hits the table.

Items will range from the seasonal -- clothes, Halloween costumes -- to the everyday, including strollers, safety items, books, bicycles and tricycles, car seats, bedding, decor and more.

Smyrna First UMC is located at 1315 Concord Road. Proceeds from the event will benefit the church's preschool.
