SMYRNA, Ga. -- Smyrna officials are considering a ban on smoking at the city's parks.

A draft ordinance to ban smoking was presented Monday at a city council work session. A Smyrna resident who became bothered by second-hand smoke in public parks requested the ban, according to a city official.

The proposal does not go as far as an ordinance brought up in Kennesaw last fall to ban smoking on all city property, as well as on street corners, and at bars, privately owned playgrounds, places of employment and other private places.

The Kennesaw proposal died after some residents complained that such a ban would represent government overreach.

Smyrna officials plan to gauge public input in the coming weeks before moving ahead on the ban.
