2 in custody after wild scene near Cumberland Parkway

COBB COUNTY, Ga. -- Two people are in custody after a wild incident that began with an alleged shoplifting attempt at Home Depot in Cobb County on Friday.

According to police, officer responded to the Home Depot on Cumberland Parkway near Interstate 285 on a shoplifting call. The suspect allegedly fled the store and got into a woman's car in the parking lot of a nearby Starbucks. In addition to the suspect and a woman, two children were also in the car, police said.

When officers attempted to make contact with the vehicle, they said the woman left the drive-thru at a high speed, striking an officer and knocking him to the ground. She then continued, hitting another car and two patrol vehicles.

The woman continued down Cumberland Parkway towards Atlanta Road, but lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a wooded area on Cumberland Parkway at Paces Walk. The woman and shoplifting suspect fled, but were taken into custody.

The two children were also taken into custody.

One shot was fired, according to Cobb County Police Officer Alicia Chilton. It's believe that the gun discharged when the officer was knocked to the ground. He is expected to be OK.

The investigation is ongoing.
