ATLANTA -- Chattahoochee Technical College is gearing up for its spring graduation ceremony.

Approximately 1,200 students will graduate at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 16 at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre.

This year's featured speaker will be Georgia Attorney General Sam Olens.

COBB COUNTY, Ga. -- The Cobb County Board of Education has named Dr. Michael Hinojosa as finalist for superintendent of Cobb County Schools.

Since 2005, Hinojosa has served as superintendent of the Dallas (Tex.) Independent School District, the nation's 14th largest school system with more than 150,000 students, 21,000 employees and a $1.2 billion annual budget.

"Dr. Hinojosa has the experience to lead our schools and address the tough issues facing a large and diverse school system like Cobb County.

High School Opera Institute to hold spring concert

ATLANTA -- Graduates of the Atlanta Opera's High School Opera Institute are getting ready to show off their amazing talent.

The students will perform arias and small ensemble pieces from some of opera's greatest works in a free spring concert at 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 5 at Morningside Presbyterian Church (1411 North Morningside Drive NE, Atlanta, 30306).

The High School Opera Institute (HSOI) is a training program for high school sophomores, juniors and seniors who are interested in pursuing careers in music.

Participants in the eight-month program attend monthly workshops and vocal coachings on topics that include preparing and auditioning for a role, selecting a music school, characterization, diction and vocal technique.

KENNESAW, Ga. -- Ten Cobb County high school graduation ceremonies will be streamed live from the district's website.

Cobb's Event Services team, along with the Harrison High School broadcast video program, will provide the necessary resources for the webcast.

"Being a parent, I believe it's an amazing opportunity for a senior's family to be involved in that special moment of graduation," said Blake Tippens, video production instructor at Harrison.

ALPHARETTA, Ga. -- New principals for two Fulton County schools have been named by the school system.

"I'm pleased to announce that Kirk Shrum from Hamilton County Schools and Grant Rivera from Cobb County Schools will be joining the Fulton County School System," said Superintendent Cindy Loe.

ATLANTA -- A Georgia law that cleared the way for a surge in new charter schools was struck down by the state's top court in a high-profile decision that will affect thousands of students and could reshape how the state's public school system is funded.

The Georgia Supreme Court's 4-3 decision on Monday overturned the 2008 Georgia Charter Schools Commission Act, which allowed the state to approve and fund charter schools over the objection of local school boards.
